| Heritage Turkeys are breeds of turkeys that used to be grown on small farms before turkeys were bred to have such huge breasts. Many of them are endangered and we feel strongly that these heritage breeds must be utilized as they were intended, as meat birds. As they gain in popularity their numbers will again increase. They take longer to grow to market size and are in general smaller than the modern turkey but the taste is like nothing you have encountered. Once you try a heritage bird you will be hooked. Order your heritage turkey today! Numbers are limited. "These rare breeds are part of our national heritage and represent a unique piece of the earth's bio-diversity. The loss of these breeds would impoverish agriculture and diminish the human spirit. We have inherited a rich variety of livestock breeds. For the sake of future generations we must work together to safeguard these treasures." (American Livestock Breeds Conservancy) We have chosen to grow Narragansett, Chocolate, and Bourban Reds this year. We will also have a few of the large breasted Whites for our customers who like the larger breast turkey. Our heritage turkeys sell for $6.00 per pound ready for the oven and average 8 to 11 pounds for hens (females) and average 16 to 20 pounds for Toms (males). Our large breast turkeys average 18 to 22 pounds for hens (females) and toms (males) can weigh up to 45 pounds. These turkeys sell for $4.50 per pound ready for the oven.
